It was an absolutely spectacular day today. The sun shone brightly upon the emerald squares of grass, the weather was warm and the breeze was sweet. A dog somewhere barked, and a woman somewhere else laughed. Children were swimming in a neighbor's pool.
Kukai lay on a beach chair, his skin positively glowing in the sun. His arm was stretched out beside him, his hand loosely grasping the hand of another sun-drenched body: Yaya Yuiki. Yaya was grinning widely. Kukai knew that these summer days did something to Yaya. His past summers had been less than pleasant, but they now held a special triumphant sort of feeling for him.
Yaya stirred, breathing in the warmth. She sat up for a moment so that she could shift her chair closer to Kukai's. When finished, she laid back down, now merely inches from her love. She grinned, and Kukai just had to smile back.
Just then, they heard a beautiful sound; the sound of innocence and memories. The soft music of an ice cream truck rang through the neighborhood, causing a slight uproar in that neighbor's pool full of children. The song was sweet, comforting and uplifting. Kukai watched Yaya very closely now. He knew that she would want to watch this. Yaya sighed and stared directly into Kukai's green eyes, grinning widely. Kukai smirked amusedly and let go of Yaya's hand as she jumped on him and dug her hands into his shorts' pockets.
She came out empty-handed, and Kukai rolled over so that he was no longer facing her, grinning. Yaya whimpered.
The reason that Kukai was grinning had a lot to do with the fact that he knew exactly what Yaya would do in every situation. The hyper girl pounced on Kukai, causing a yelp and after that, laughter, to escape from his mouth. Their sun-warmed skin stuck together slightly in the struggle, and eventually Yaya was able to stuff her hands into Kukai's pockets, biting her lip as she searched for change.
The neighborhood children were cheering, and had evidently stopped the ice cream truck. Yaya pulled her hand out of Kukai's pocket triumphantly. She squealed in delight as she dashed to the street.
And as she ran, Kukai buried his face in the beach chair, laughing so hard that he thought his lungs would burst.
