Chapter 8
Happily Ever After?
That night Rin saw Len in her dreams. He was trying to communicate with her in her dream, but she couldn't make out what he was saying, just that he wanted to tell her something. She wondered if he knew about her plan to kill Kaito, but decided he probably didn't.
The very next few days was the Halloween Festival. Kaito wandered through the crowd, the same outfit he had worn at the masquerade ball on, with a pair of fake fangs on his teeth, looking for the girl. He soon gave up, wandering away from the crowd and going towards the castle gardens, wondering where Len was.
He soon saw a girl facing the fountain. She looked a bit troubled, her blue eyes from behind the mask looking a bit worried, her blonde hair pulled up behind her… There was something familiar about her, and it wasn't just from the ball that she was familiar to him. He shook off the feeling and walked over to 'Yuuki'. "Are you okay, Yuuki?"
Rin blinked, looking away, a frown on her face. "I-I'm fine, King Kaito…"
"Something seems wrong," he answered.
She shook her head. "Could you just come on a walk with me?"
Miku and Len watched them a little worriedly. Miku turned to Len, asking, "Where's the knife? I can't see it."
"She hid it in her sleeve," Len frowned, walking with Miku, following Kaito and Rin.
Len put a hand on Rin's shoulder. Rin blinked, feeling something on her shoulder, turning and looking, but seeing no one. She paled a little. Kaito blinked, frowning. "Are you sure you're okay?"
Rin nodded, replying, "J-just fine…"
They had soon left the garden and were walking through the woods, which Rin found a bit more creepy than she had thought when she was planning everything out. The knife in her sleeve felt cold against her arm even though she had wrapped it up in a beautiful fabric she had been able to sneak away from Kaito's room once when he was taking a nap. She continued to walk beside Kaito.
Soon they couldn't hear the town anymore, and there were no more festival lights visible. The entire clearing they were in was lit lightly with moonlight. Rin and Kaito's blue eyes seemed to glow in the moonlight.
"Yuuki, we're a bit far from the town," Kaito said a bit nervously.
"I'm aware of that," she forced a smile, her arms behind her back, she seemed a bit weird…
"What's wrong, Yuuki?" Kaito asked, his eyes widening. He was now aware that this girl was dangerous and his guards were gone.
"My name isn't Yuuki, you might know that by now," she kept the forced smile on her face, pulling out the knife. I can do this… I can do this… I HAVE to do this!
She pulled off her mask, glaring at the King as coldly as she could. He gasped, staring. It was Rin, the princess of the Yellow Kingdom.
"But-how-How are you alive?" He asked, staring at her.
"Easy. Len's dead because of you, so I've come for my revenge," Rin said as relaxed as she could, her voice almost hiding all of the guilt she suddenly felt and all of the nervousness she was trying to deal with. "Len took my clothes, he wanted me to escape. He said, 'Everything'll be okay, we are twins, who would know the difference anyway?'. Well apparently he was right because now he's dead and I'm standing her about to kill you."
"Unbelievable," the King was shocked.
She merely glared. "Are you ready to die?"
"Wait, Rin, Please don't kill me!" He said, "Can't we work this out?"
But it wasn't needed. Rin dropped the knife and fell to the ground, sobbing. "I-I can't do it… Len… I'm sorry…" she whispered, crying and wiping her tears.
Kaito hesitated before putting an arm around her. "It's okay," he murmured, "Calm down…"
She wrapped her arms around him, crying. He awkwardly sat there for a moment before hugging her back. He murmured to her, "Calm down… I'll take you to the castle… We'll let you stay…"
"Thank… You…" she murmured quietly.
He walked with her through the forest and back through the streets. It was so strange for him. So much had happened, it seemed, to him. She didn't hide her face, stubbornly holding it in pride for all of the villagers to see. Everyone was staring and speaking about how the Yellow Princess was there.
"Wasn't she dead?"
"What is she doing here?"
"What's the King doing with her?"
He simply walked beside her, trying to display as much pride as she did, not holding his face up high but not hiding it either; he simply looked ahead of himself, leading her. Once they had gotten back into the palace, Kaito called, out of habit, "Len?"
Rin, out of habit, replied, "Yes, your majesty?"
The two blinked and stared at each other. Rin blushed and looked away.
"What exactly happened? How did you get away?" Kaito asked her, leading her to his room, letting her sit on his bed as he stood.
"Well… You were all attacking the kingdom. Like I said, Len told me to take his clothes and escape. And then after that I decided I'd… kill you… And then I found this inn and stayed there for about a year so I would at least know how to do chores and then I came here. I decided I'd pose as Len until I was able to… You know," she told him.
He nodded. "I'm sorry you had to lose your brother."
"It doesn't hurt as much as it used to… But I really don't hurt that much anymore," she told him. "It's okay…"
"Now, about your living arrangements… In case you don't know yet, the Yellow Kingdom was taken over by the Blue Kingdom," he told her, "You might have been in that inn. Was it not in one of the big kingdoms?"
"No, it was in a small village," Rin answered.
He nodded. "I think it would be better if you stayed here with me. Until then, you can stay in my room."
She blinked and blushed before nodding. "O-okay…"
Miku and Len smiled as they watched Rin and Kaito.
"I think maybe we can go back now… She doesn't really need watching over anymore," Len said to Miku. The two smiled and held hands, flying back towards the clouds that they knew their home was.
The next morning, Rin was in the gardens, sitting by the pond that she had been sitting by with Kaito less than a week ago. She silently watched the fish, looking at Kaito when he sat down with her.
Kaito smiled at her. "Good morning."
"Good morning," she said politely.
There was an awkward silence between the two.
"…So… You were Len this whole time?" he asked.
Rin hesitated before nodding. "I posed as my twin brother since he posed as me when he died. I figured I would be able to stay alive if no one knew who I was."
"You don't have to worry about that ever again. I can promise you no one will ever hurt you," he said to her. "I can't promise that you'll get your kingdom back, though."
She looked back at the pond. "I don't really want it back… I don't think I can handle it all alone. I don't feel like I can do it…"
Kaito blushed before turning to her. "Would you like to stay here? …With me…? You are my best friend…"
Rin blushed as well before smiling. "I'd like that."
Kaito hesitated, looking at the smiling girl before smiling again as well, leaning towards her and kissing her. She stared at him before returning the kiss happily.
