Chapter 6
A Masquerade Ball
Rin continued to work at the Blue kingdom's castle, serving the Prince breakfast every morning and doing whatever the Prince asked her to. She had become a sort of 'assistant' for Prince Kaito in the past few weeks, apparently knowing that Rin was 'Len' made Kaito a bit interested in him. He had made it a point to have 'Len' as a personal assistant to his parents.
One day when she was taking a break, Rin was sitting with a few other servants she'd made acquaintances while working there. She said to them, "So, are there any celebrations or anything coming up?"
"Well, we thought you might know, but yeah, there are a few," one of them said. "There's the Prince's masquerade ball and there's a festival coming up."
"What's the festival for?" Rin asked.
"Halloween, of course," the servant replied simply.
"I see," Rin nodded. That meant two opportunities within the next few months, if she wanted to be even more disguised. She looked out the window in thought before continuing on to bring the Prince his breakfast.
Another month passed by, and it was the night of the masquerade ball. Rin was prepared. As soon as Kaito was done preparing for the ball, she would go to her quarters and change as well, putting on her mask. She would lure him away, and gain his trust…
She stood with Kaito, who was looking in the mirror.
"What do you think, Len?" Kaito asked her.
She answered, "You look stunning, your Highness. Any girl who sees you shall swoon tonight."
He nodded, putting on his mask. "Well, I'll look forward to seeing you there."
"I might not be able to go," she replied.
"Oh," he said. "Well, have a pleasant night."
"You as well," she replied before leaving the room. She walked down the halls, entering her own room. She quickly dressed in the black and yellow gown, putting on a black mask as well. She had bought this at least a week in advance. She looked at herself in the mirror for a moment before slipping the knife onto a strap she had wrapped around her shin. She smiled.
She continued down the hall after getting dressed, the music had already started. The guests were dancing, and Kaito was sitting on a chair on one side of the room, watching them.
Rin walked towards him, and smiled, saying, "Would you like to dance?"
He shrugged. "Sure."
He stood up, leading her to the dance floor. The two danced for a bit. Kaito knew there was something about this girl he liked. When other girls started to notice Kaito, he found that he only wanted to dance with the girl in the mask. He looked at her, asking, "Would you like to go to the gardens?"
She nodded. "That sounds good."
She followed him towards the gardens, walking beside him, talking. "So what hobbies do you have?"
"I take fencing and archery, I can sing, too," he told her, smiling.
"I sing as well," she smiled. "I like to cook, too."
"That sounds great," he replied.
The two had ran out of words to say, awkwardly walking. Soon they came to a part in the garden where they could still hear the music, the gazebo too perfect to dance in.
"May I have this dance?" He held out his hand for her.
She smiled at him. "Yes, you may."
She took his hand, walking with him. The smile was half a mask, half real. Ugh! Why haven't I killed him yet? …I don't really want to kill him, but… What am I saying? I will kill him!
But she forgot all of that when she started dancing with him, smiling. Len and Miku were watching, Miku sitting on the edge of the gazebo and Len sitting at a table outside of it.
"They make a nice couple," Miku said.
Len shrugged. "I guess."
Miku smiled at the two dancing. Len looked at her for a moment before walking up to her, holding out his hand. "May I have this dance?"
Miku blinked at him, staring for a moment before smiling again. "Yes, you may."
And in a moment, the angels were dancing together gracefully, so lightly sometimes their feet accidentally came off of the ground, it looked like they were flying.
The two couples were happy right now, and that seemed to be all that mattered. But the ball seemed to be short lived, because, soon they were the only people there. If you count two angels that no one can see at a party as 'people,' as well.
Kaito kissed Rin's hand gently as she smiled at him, about to leave.
"When may I see you again?" he asked.
"I might return at the Halloween Festival," she smiled at him.
He nodded, asking, "What is your name?"
Rin paused before telling him, "Yuuki."
"Well, I'll see you around, Yuuki," Kaito smiled at her.
"I'll see you, too. I have to leave now, my parents are probably worried, though," she turned, leaving the room. And soon, everyone was gone, including the angels.
