Chapter 9
It's Wednesday November 20, and we do not have one plan whatsoever. Shooter's lying on the bed, Gumi and Teto are reading some short novel called Where'd you go?, Luka and I are sitting back to back on the loveseat with our legs hanging off the armrest, and Miku's in the kitchen apparently making some surprise, because she wouldn't let me in there when I wanted some water.
Speaking of Miku, I haven't seen her in a really long time. "Out!" Miku yelled when I stepped one foot into the kitchen. I quickly backed out and said, " Come on Miku! We need to think of some sort of plan!" "Hold on! They're almost done!" I sighed and walked back to Gumi's room. "Where've you been?" Shooter asked me when I sat back down next to Luka. "Trying to get in the kitchen," I dryly replied laying my head on Luka's shoulder.
About two minutes later….
"You guys wanna watch TV?" I asked. "Yeah," everyone else replied like it was one voice. We went into the family room and Gumi grabbed the remote and asked, "What do you guys wanna watch?" "Just turn on the news." I replied. "What channel?" "Three Twenty-five." "Kay."
She turned on Channel 325, and there was a reporter lady with short curly brown hair and blue eyes talking, but I couldn't hear. "Hey Gums, turn it up." I said. "Only if you promise to stop calling me Gums!" She turned up the volume around five percent more. "Reports of a Mind-disabled school burned to the ground last night." I nearly choked on my own spit. "WHAT?" I practically screamed. Everyone stared at the TV wide-eyed.
"Here's Liza Summers on the scoop," "Well, there's not much to tell. Last night we had our first fire in the past nine years," "And may I ask the name of the school, and what time it burnt?" "The name, 's Home for Mind-disabled children, and it burnt at almost exactly two p.m. last night. Unfortunately, most of our students didn't realize in time." "Oh, my…" "Yes in fact, there were only ten survivors. Lily Johnson, Carli Vickson, R-"
Suddenly, Gumi dropped the remote and a Chicken for All commercial came on. "Buy my delicious chicken! Only 9.99 For three whole buckets!" "NO!" we all yelled. "Change it back! Change it Back!" I yelled. Shooter grabbed the remote and switched it back, but it was too late. They had already started a different report on a wreck in Kyoto. Who would care about that?
Shooter handed Gumi the remote, and she turned it off. My eyes filled with tears. I quickly wiped them out, and buried my head in my knees. "Oh Len, that's where she is, isn't it?" Teto asked me putting her hand on my shoulder. I slowly nodded. "And thanks to Gumi, we don't know if she's-" Teto stopped, and I'm glad too. If she would've finished that sentence I would've bursted out crying.
"I'm so sorry Len!" Gumi almost yelled, tears forming in her eyes. "It's okay," I said with a sniff. "I know you didn't mean to." I got up and hugged her. I wiped the tears out of her eyes as she hugged me back and said, "You're an amazing friend Len." Uh-Oh, I bet Luka's getting jealous again. Sure enough, her eyes were squinted and her face was turning pink.
"What?" Gumi said, breaking away from me, turning to Luka, and putting her hands on her hips. "Nothing Gumi. I-I mean we, know you didn't mean to. Right Teto?" Luka said turning a bit to face Teto. "Yes. I'm sorry I said that. You know me, kinda just gets down to blaming easy. Heh-heh." She replied, obviously embarrassed, scratching her head. "It's okay, Teto." Gumi assured her, and walked over, and they hugged.
I smiled and sat back down next to Luka on the sofa. She stilled seemed a little mad, so I kissed her on the lips. It tasted minty this time. No surprise there. We brushed our teeth awhile ago, after supper. I looked up at the clock. Ten Thirty. I shrugged and closed my eyes for a bit of peace, and then I heard Miku yell from the kitchen, "They're done!"
